Luddites R Lemmings? Not Us!
Milt Vine of Seattle Bindery is one of several of our industry friends who publishes an always interesting e-newsletter, George Twill of Twill Printing in Berkeley Heights NJ and Lisa Bickford of Highlight Printing in Minneapolis also do a great job "connecting" with clients.
We are grateful to Milt for helping us promote print as a still vital and ALIVE part of the media mix:
Always Greener. The IAPHC's Kevin Keane has stirred up some interesting dialogue with his recent post, The Coal-Fired Internet, which was picked up by WhatTheyThink's Managing Editor, Patrick Henry. In short, he urges all of us to communicate the short- and long-term viability of print and asks us to send him any “vignettes, any war stories, or any factoids that I can use to help the Nouveau-Digerati understand that we graphic arts professionals are not Luddites, and in fact are very early adopters of all kinds of digital technologies.” He quotes one such item: “Producing and reading a traditional newspaper can consume 20% less energy than reading news online for more than 30 minutes.” Let's all put on our thinking caps to promote print and be loud about the non-green aspect of computer monitors. Kudos to our Craftsman Club leader who continues to lead! Click here for the WTT posting.
The Viral Power of Social Networking
The viral power of Social Networking
We spotted this blurb in one of the always excellent and provocative ruminations from Dr. Joe Webb. We sent it to printers and other graphic professionals around the world in the first week of September 2009, and not one had previously seen it.
As of Monday (Labour Day) 7 September 2009, more than 496,000 views had occurred -- a truly eye-popping statistic.

10 Things Every Designer Should Know
Even though we’ve been using desktop publishing for nearly 30 years, it seems that many of the same issues still crop up. And as new features appear in graphics software, we develop interesting new issues! Good communication is still the key to successful print. Are you a printer? Share this with your customers. Unsure of how you should prepare your files? Don’t be shy. A simple question now can prevent heartbreak later. Build a healthy relationship with your printer, one job at a time. With that goal, here are Ten Helpful Hints (PDF here) to get the conversation started:
1. One Size Does Not Fit All: Build your job to the correct
trim size, and provide bleed. Don’t build a lonely little
business card in the middle of a letter-sized page: create a
3.5”x2” document, and add .125” of color or image outside
that trim area.
Using Holograms & Holographic Foils

If you’re not sure of the difference between a hologram and a holographic foil, then read on! This primer should help you decide which option will work best for your creative vision as well as your budget.A hologram is a unique design element that is
